3.3-Liter V-6 Engine Specs

Ford Engine Specs

Ford's 3.3-liter V-6 engine powers the automaker's full-size pickup trucks and SUVs. Like its predecessor, the 3.5-liter V-6, it belongs to the Ford Cyclone engine family, along with Ford's earlier engines in the form of the 3.7-liter and 4.0-liter V-6. First introduced in 2018, the 3.3-liter V-6 shares a few important characteristics with the 3.5-liter Duratec V-6, including direct fuel injection and twin independent variable cam timing.

As a result of direct fuel injection and a high compression ratio of 12:1, the smaller V-6 produces more horsepower and torque than the older version and increases fuel economy by a single mpg, making it a slightly more efficient alternative. It also features a bore of 3.56 inches and a stroke of 3.41 inches. It produces 290 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, making it a suitable option for car buyers looking for an economical engine with the power to meet their needs.

The 3.3-liter V-6 enjoys a slight edge over the competition regarding fuel efficiency, offering drivers a combined mpg of 22 for two-wheel drive and 20 for four-wheel drive. The hybrid engine form with the Ford Explorer adds even more fuel efficiency, with a combined mpg of 28. It also increases horsepower to 318 with 322 lb-ft of torque.

The V-6's maximum towing capacity of 8,200 pounds makes it easy to haul bulkier equipment, campers, or smaller trailers over long distances. Compared to a four-cylinder engine, Ford's V-6 engines offer additional power and improved efficiency, and the 3.3-liter V-6 is no different.

Which Models Contain the 3.3-Liter V-6 Engine?

Currently, the 3.3.-liter V-6 is available in the Ford F-150, quickly becoming one of Ford's most popular pickup trucks due to its reliability, durability, and impressive payload. In addition to its high reliability, many drivers prefer the F-150 due to its longevity. As a result, the V-6 is an ideal engine for F-150 drivers who don't necessarily need the same amount of power Ford offers in the 2.7-liter twin-turbocharged V-6, the 5.0-liter V-8, the 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-6, or the 3.5-liter hybrid V-6. It's also a good option for drivers looking to save a little on gas.

The F-150 currently offers this engine on its base XL trim. It also features an 8-inch adaptive touch screen and a rearview camera that allows drivers to see the area directly behind their vehicle. It's also standard on the XLT trim package.

The Ford Explorer also includes this engine, although it features a hybrid version Ford designed to enhance fuel efficiency beginning in 2020. The Ford Explorer is a popular SUV for drivers looking for a reliable, fuel-efficient midsize SUV that contains valuable safety features and technology with a robust infotainment system. While the Explorer can't quite tow as much as the F-150, it's still a useful option for those who prefer a more durable SUV.

A 3.3-liter V-6 electric motor, paired with lithium-ion batteries, assists in producing a powerful option for drivers who prefer something with a bit of additional fuel efficiency. The Explorer's regenerative braking also ensures that the battery stays charged. This hybrid engine is available on all eight trim levels.

Is the 3.3-Liter V-6 Engine a Good Engine Option?

With three selectable driving modes, the F-150's 3.3-liter V-6 is a highly capable engine that makes the most of your vehicle's fuel and offers a smoother ride quality than other engines. In addition, it provides excellent stability and control, regardless of your daily driving needs. Although V-6 engines might lack the power and acceleration of V-8s, they make up for it by providing superior handling and fuel economy.

While the 3.3-liter engine might be more than enough to handle your daily needs, whether you're cruising down the highway or hauling material, you may require a little more power if you need a vehicle that can deliver at the worksite. On the other hand, if you haul smaller loads and need something fuel-efficient, the V-6 may be the perfect engine.

What Other V-6 Engines Does Ford Offer?

There are several other V-6 engines that Ford offers that might interest you. 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6, 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6, and the high-output 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 are all popular options for F-150 owners. While the 3.3-liter can handle most of your daily needs, drivers who require extra power might prefer the 2.7-liter EcoBoost, which can churn out 325 horsepower and an impressive 400 lb-ft of torque. The 3.5-liter EcoBoost goes head-to-head with gas and diesel competitors, offering best-in-class towing thanks to its ability to generate 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque.

The high-output version of the 3.5-liter engine is available only on the F-150's top trim, offering an impressive six selectable drive modes and producing 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque. On the Explorer, you can also choose a 3.0-liter EcoBoost V-6, which can churn out 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. This engine may be desirable if you want to be able to tow additional weight.
