A visit to Grapevine, Texas — known as the Christmas capital of Texas — should be first on your list if you find yourself in Dallas during Christmas. This Dallas suburb begins celebrating Christmas on Thanksgiving weekend by transforming downtown into a Christmas dreamland with bright lights, giant decorations, and animated characters. When you visit Christmas in Grapevine, you'll find an endless assortment of daily events to participate in and view. There are live performances, wine tastings, shopping, choreographed lights show, a carriage, Christmas carolers, and parades.

Grapevine is under a half-hour drive from Dallas; just take I-30 W and Texas 113 TEXpress to get there. The downtown festivities are easy to find and run from about 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. With 40 days of festival fun, this is a perfect spot for a romantic evening with a partner or an exciting day of shopping and fun with the kids. For more information, call 1-800-457-6338.

The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden

The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden is a sight to see any time of year. However, during Christmas, the area goes from lovely to breathtaking. Presented by Reliant, Holiday at the Arboretum is an annual event that brings the joys of Christmas and the season out into nature. The arboretum is decorated with the Pauline and Austin Neuhoff Family Christmas Village. The village is a collection of dozens of charming shops modeled after a European Christmas Village. A centerpiece of the decorations is a 23-foot, German-built authentic pyramid with moving animation pieces on every level of the pyramid.

The village is great to visit during the day or night. That said, it really shines once the sun sets. There's a tavern serving delicious food with a beer garden and stage featuring live entertainment for guests. At night, the trees are lit with twinkling lights and the shopkeepers pass out samples of products to entice buyers. For a prime family photo opportunity, guests at the arboretum can visit Santa's home and take a picture with the jolly man. Expected to debut this year is a fun musical tree, standing at over 50 feet and playing some favorite Christmas tunes.

The 12 Days of Christmas display is a must-visit section for snow-globe lovers. It's a carefully constructed set of glass gazebos that looks like an oversized music box. The gazebos each have moving mannequins and animated creatures that move to sounds and lights.

Holiday at the Arboretum runs from November 9 to December 31. The arboretum is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and hosts special evening hours from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. throughout the event. Check the website for specifics. You'll find the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden at 8525 Garland Road in Dallas. General admission for the event is $10 to $25 and members have an exclusive invite to the annual lighting ceremony. For membership information and pricing, call 214-515-6615.

Enchant Christmas

Enchant Christmas at Fair Park transports visitors to a magical Christmas kingdom, complete with a Christmas light maze and quaint Christmas village. Creators base this spectacular event on a charming fictive back-story, which claims a shooting star fell to earth to create this winter wonderland. Your visit to the Enchant Forest and North Pole will carry you to a dreamland filled with flying reindeer, talking snowmen, and Mr. and Mrs. Claus.

Visitors can ice skate, sample gourmet treats, and visit the artisan Christmas market for some unique gifts to share with their favorite people. This fun event runs from November 26 to January 2 at Esplanade at Fair Park in Dallas. Festivities typically begin at about 4:30 p.m. daily. The immersive experience is a memorable one you'll cherish for a lifetime. Tickets start at $25 for children 3-17 years and $35 for adults.

Chocolate Tours

No holiday season is complete without sweets. For a special posh treat, enjoy the beauty of the holiday by viewing the gorgeous lights from a heated motorcoach. You'll be treated to a special tour of the Dallas area, some smooth hot chocolate, sweets from local dessert venues, and festive music.

Tours run from November 26 through December 30, with ticket prices starting at $45. Visit Dallas Bites and Sites Tours for more information or to book a reservation.

The Elf on the Shelf's Magical Holiday Journey

The now famous Elf on the Shelf makes the holiday season in Dallas a little more whimsical. The Elf on the Shelf's Magical Holiday Journey is an event you don't want to miss. Kids will love seeing the story come to life and can appreciate their own elves just a little more.

There are jugglers, acrobats, and talented performers as you walk through this elf-sized world of wonder. Guests can meet scout elves and stroll the market to buy holiday sweets, gifts, and mementos.

The venue for this event is Globe Life Park at 1000 Ballpark Way #400, Arlington. Ticket prices vary by date but start at $19.95 for children 13 and younger and $24.95 for adults. For more information, email [email protected].
