When you need a full-size truck that can haul large loads with high payload capacities, consider one of Ford's Super Duty trucks. You have three noncommercial Super Duty trucks to choose from: the F-250, F-350, and F-450. Each truck includes several engine options and towing capabilities to help you do the best hauling job possible.

About Ford Super Duty Trucks

In 1998, Ford introduced its first Super Duty truck. This style differs from the popular F-150 with a different body style, stronger suspension, and a heavier frame. The Super Duty series can perform commercial-grade work, but they have a price point and features ideal for consumer use.

All three trucks in the modern Super Duty series have six trims: the XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and the top-tier Limited. For 2024, you'll see changes in Ford Super Duty pickup trucks, including the Pro Power Onboard generator, a slight exterior redesign, and new technology features. Let's explore the key features, engine options, and towing capabilities of Ford's Super Duty trucks.

Cab and Bed Configurations

Depending on the trim, the F-250, F-350, and F-450 can come as a Regular Cab, SuperCab, or Super CrewCab paired with a 6.75-foot bed or a longer 8-foot bed. With the Regular Cab, you get two doors and one bench seat that can fit up to three people.

With the SuperCab, you get four doors (with the rear doors opening backward) and two rows of seats that fit up to six people. When you need the maximum room in your Ford Super Duty truck, choose the CrewCab, which has four full-size doors and two rows of seats that fit up to six people, with lots of room for those riding in the back row.

Power and Performance

Each series has powerful engine choices, and the bigger options feature increased towing and payload capacity.

The engine options for the F-250, F-350, and F-450 include:

  • A 6.8-liter V-8 engine that delivers 405 horsepower and 445 lb-ft of torque.
  • A 7.3-liter V-8 engine that produces 430 horsepower and 485 lb-ft of torque.
  • A 6.7-liter turbo-diesel Power Stroke V-8 engine delivers 475 horsepower and 1,050 lb-ft of torque.
  • A 6.7-liter high-output Power Stroke V-8 turbo-diesel engine delivering an impressive 500 horsepower and 1,200 lb-ft of torque.

A TorqShift 10-speed automatic transmission with selectable drive modes pairs with the engine options, as does Ford's F-Series four-wheel-drive system with manual or automatic locking hubs. Depending on the cab configuration and Super Duty trim, you'll get a 29-, 34-, or 48-gallon fuel tank (the F-450 comes exclusively with a 48-gallon fuel tank). These trucks ride surprisingly well for their size, with front and rear stabilizers, nonlimited-slip differentials, and coil spring suspension systems.

Towing and Payload Capacity

The Ford Super Duty series pickup trucks are suitable for towing, carrying many supplies, and other tough work. You'll need the right engine option, towing equipment, and towing packages to achieve the maximum towing and payload capacity. The numbers for the 2023 Ford Super Duty series’ F-250, F-350, and F-450 are below.

F-250

The F-250 can achieve up to 22,000 pounds of conventional towing, 22,700 pounds of fifth-wheel or gooseneck towing, and 4,268 pounds of payload capacity.

F-350

The F-350 can achieve up to 27,000 pounds of conventional towing, 32,500 pounds of fifth-wheel or gooseneck towing, and 8,000 pounds of payload capacity.

F-450

The F-450 is the king of the Ford Super Duty series and can achieve up to 30,000 pounds of conventional towing, 40,000 pounds of fifth-wheel or gooseneck towing, and 6,457 pounds of payload capacity.

Towing and Payload Comparisons With Other Truck Brands

In comparison, the Chevrolet Silverado 2500 has a maximum conventional and fifth-wheel or gooseneck towing capacity of 18,500 pounds and up to 36,000 pounds with the Chevrolet Silverado 3500. The maximum payload capacity for the Silverado 2500 and Silverado 3500 is 3,900 pounds and 7,442 pounds, respectively. When you compare Ram heavy-duty trucks, the Ram 3500 has a maximum towing capacity of 37,090 pounds and a maximum payload capacity of 7,680 pounds.

As you can see, Ford F-Series Super Duty trucks offer the best-in-class conventional and fifth-wheel or gooseneck towing capabilities and payload capacity.

Safety and Driver-Assist Technologies

The Ford-Series Super Duty trucks are large, with powerful engines and impressive towing and payload capacities. With a noncommercial truck this large and powerful, it's nice to know that Ford equips the Super Duty trucks with advanced driver-assist technologies. Depending on the trim level, the Super Duty pickup truck has the Ford Co-Pilot 360 suite of safety features, including adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and pre-collision assist. You'll also appreciate having intersection assist, available pro-trailer backup assist, and a 360-degree camera system.

Off-Road Packages

If you plan to take your Ford Super Duty truck on rugged backroad trails, consider adding an optional off-road package, including:

  • The XL Off-Road package: This package includes 33-inch off-road tires, a rear electronic locking differential, and steel skid plates. You also get water-fording tubes to help dry your engine when crossing streams or creeks.
  • The Tremor Off-Road package: This package includes Super Duty truck 35-inch all-terrain tires, a specialized off-road-tuned suspension system, and extra terrain management system modes — Rock Crawl and Trail Control.
