Bronco Sport Tow Packages

Posted at Thu, Aug 11, 2022 11:15 AM

With the right towing capacity, a compact SUV is capable of all sorts of adventure and work uses. Whether moving somewhere new, hauling equipment for your business, or just taking a road trip, chances are you'll be happy with a capable Ford SUV like the Bronco. Meanwhile, the Bronco Sport is a similar model, just a bit smaller and more budget-friendly.

If you're not certain which type of Bronco Sport is best for your towing needs or how it's different from the regular Bronco, Planet Ford Dallas has you covered. Let's examine the advantages of this rugged, affordable off-roader SUV, as well as analyze the Bronco Sport tow packages in more detail.

What Makes the Bronco Sport Unique?

The Bronco Sport takes the Bronco's boxy, four-wheel-drive, off-road mid-size SUV design and creates an extra-affordable alternative with a little less engine power. As far as 4x4 SUVs in its price range, you won't find a better overall value when it comes to generous standard features, reliable off-roading fun, and a nice appearance inside and out.

High-performance off-road stability suspension equipment, available on both Ford SUVs, helps take the impact out of wobbly and uneven roads. Both also have a choice between two engines and off-road active suspensions, but the original Bronco has beefier engines with higher maximum towing capacity ranges. Specifically, the Bronco Sport tows anywhere from 2,000 to 2,200 lbs as of 2022, while the Bronco ranges from 3,340 to 4,500 lbs of maximum towing capacity.

The Bronco is built off a body-on-frame construction reminiscent of a pickup truck, rugged but stiffer to turn. By contrast, the Bronco Sport has a unibody construction like those found on larger sedans and crossovers. Recent versions of the Bronco Sport ride on the same underbody as the Ford Escape. As the slightly smaller of the two, the Sport can be handy in cities or parking lots, although both are versatile on and off the pavement.

Why Getting a Bronco Sport Is the Right Move

Apart from style, the 2022 Bronco Sport shows how far Ford is willing to go to make a smaller off-road SUV one of the most powerful and useful. For instance, the included terrain management system lets you switch in and out of five available driving modes: Normal, Eco, Sport, Sand, and Slippery. Here are just a few other notable advantages of getting a 2022 Bronco Sport:

  • Up to 250 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque with an available EcoBoost 2-liter engine, as well as 181 horsepower and 190 lb-ft of torque on the starting 1.5-liter engine.
  • Zero-to-60-mph time as low as 7.2 seconds.
  • Comfortable, easy-clean cloth seating.
  • Two adjustable liftgate floodlights on the Badlands trim, excellent for camping.
  • Luxurious features such as heated and ventilated seats are available on the Big Bend Convenience Package.

Both are capable and adaptable SUVs, but while the Bronco's engines are more powerful, the Sport offers still-great power ratings at a lower price point. The Bronco Sport is fairly unique compared to the regular Bronco, built off a different platform and with a bigger focus on smooth city or suburban driving.

If you prioritize higher towing capacity, you might be happier with the 2022 Bronco, with engine configurations that range from 3,340 to 4,500 lbs of maximum towing. However, the 2022 Bronco Sport can also tow with the right equipment. Let's go over the current Bronco Sport's available tow packages and how those affect its towing capacity.

Bronco Sport Tow Packages and Ratings

The 2022 Bronco Sport tows either 2,000 or 2,200 lbs once you equip it with the Class II Trailer Tow Package. The ranges would be acceptable for a larger SUV but are pretty impressive on the compact Bronco Sport. The roof is also rated to support up to 600 lbs of static weight, great for kayaks, bikes, and more.

If you want that highest possible tow rating of 2,200 lbs, you'll need to get the Class II Trailer Tow Package on the Badlands trim level. Depending on availability, it may become possible to upgrade the lower models to this level of power soon. Even if not, you can still get the Class II Trailer Tow Package on other trims, giving you a towing capacity of 2,000 lbs.

At present, the Class II Trailer Tow Package is the only Bronco Sport tow package, and models without it aren't rated for traditional towing. The Class II Trailer Tow group also comes with Trailer Sway Control, a safety feature that discourages any trailers from leaning during a turn.

Other Bronco Sport Options and Packages

If you intend to tow with the Bronco Sport, you'll probably need the Class II Trailer Tow Package if you aren't using a braked trailer and need to pull something over 500 lbs, just for safety. However, that isn't the only optional package you can use to customize the SUV. Some other useful options include Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist+, an active safety suite that expands from the other Co-Pilot360 standard equipment by adding stop-and-go adaptive cruise control with automatic lane centering, pedestrian-detecting automatic emergency braking, and more.

The biggest factor when shopping for a new Bronco Sport will usually be the trim level. The Badlands, for instance, has a trim-exclusive package called the Premium available, which adds leather-trimmed power front seats, a 10-speaker audio system with a subwoofer, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear parking sensors, and other pleasant upgrades. Or you could keep it simple with the starting model and stick to the tow package or somewhere in between; it's up to you.

Ford Bronco Sport: An Affordable Bronco Alternative

Compared to the Bronco, this SUV is a bit smaller, more off-road-focused, and lower in price. Its engines aren't quite as powerful, leading to no actual tow ratings for 2022 unless you equip the Class II Trailer Tow Package. When you do, you'll get 2,200 lbs of maximum towing out of the Badlands trim level and 2,000 lbs for the other trims.
