The competition for the best sport utility vehicle or SUV has ramped up in recent years with the return of some familiar names. For instance, the Ford Bronco and the Chevy Blazer have made a comeback and are among the most popular SUVs available today. Let's explore how the 2021 year model of these SUVs stack up with a brief overview of their specs and available features.

Exterior Design and Trim Levels

The 2021 Ford Bronco has a retro exterior design, taking cues from its past while embodying modern touches sure to catch the eye. Its boxy shape is a shot from the past, and it is as aesthetically pleasing as it was so many years ago. Flared fenders, crisp lines, round headlights, and rugged accents hint at the Bronco's off-road capability while appealing to nostalgic Ford fans.

You can have the 2021 Ford Bronco in the Base, Big Bend, Black Diamond, Outer Banks, Badlands, Wildtrak, and First Edition trim levels. The Bronco also offers two-door and four-door versions.

The 2021 Chevy Blazer is far from retro with an utterly modern exterior design. There are only two things remotely familiar to Blazers from the past. The first, of course, is the classic Chevrolet bowtie. The second is the name Blazer. Its sweeping curves, distinct lines, and aggressive stance all add to the Blazer's undeniable futuristic look. You can have the 2021 Chevy Blazer in the L, 1LT, 2LT, 3LT, RS, and Premier trim levels. The Blazer is only available in a four-door version.

Power

Two engines can be found in the 2021 Ford Bronco, depending on your preference. The first is a 2.3-liter turbo-four with 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The second is a 2.7-liter V-6 with 310 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. Both engines provide the Bronco with more than enough power. The power from these engines is efficiently transferred to the ground by one of two transmissions. The first is a seven-speed manual transmission. The second is a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Three engine choices come with the 2021 Chevy Blazer. The first is a 2.5-liter inline-four with 193 horsepower and 188 pound-feet of torque. The second is a 2.0-liter turbo-four with 227 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The third is a 3.6-liter V-6 with 308 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. The only available transmission in the Blazer is a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Performance

Though the 2021 Ford Bronco and 2021 Chevy Blazer are both categorized as SUVs, their performance couldn't differ more. The Bronco is a beefier, more rugged SUV with a taste for the off-road, while the Blazer could be described as a city-slicker. The Bronco has an advanced off-road system with up to seven G.O.A.T. modes for the most challenging off-road terrains. These G.O.A.T. modes include:

  • Normal.
  • Eco.
  • Sport.
  • Slippery.
  • Mud/Ruts.
  • Sand.
  • Rock Crawl.
  • Baja.

The Bronco's powertrain response, steering, and handling are optimized via these modes, inspiring driver confidence regardless of the terrain that lies ahead. The Bronco's advanced four-wheel-drive system with automatic on-demand engagement features a two-speed electromechanical transfer case.

This feature provides an auto mode that allows for automatic on-demand engagement to select between two-wheel high and four-wheel high. The result is a four-wheel-drive system that continuously varies power distribution to the front wheels for optimized performance despite on-road conditions. The Bronco is also capable of flat towing when the transfer case is placed in the neutral position, and it can tow up to 3500 pounds.

Though the 2021 Chevy Blazer has an available all-wheel-drive system, it's more suited to gravel driveways or an occasional dirt road when it comes to leaving the pavement. On the other hand, the Blazer is competent on-road with nimble handling and a smooth overall ride. It can tow up to 4,500 pounds when properly equipped and has a drive mode selector with five available modes for your convenience.

These drive modes include:

  • Tour.
  • Tow/Haul.
  • Sport Mode.
  • Available All-Wheel-Drive.
  • Off-Road.
