How Good is the New Ford Ranger?

The Ford Ranger is a midsize pickup truck offering superb strength and the capability to handle your adventures, wherever they may take you. The Ranger is offered in three well-equipped trim levels and two cab and bed sizes. These options and a number of appearance and equipment packages enable you to customize your truck to perfectly suit your style. Let's take a look at some of the features that make the Ford Ranger a superb choice of truck for you.

Stylish and Rugged Exterior

The Ford Ranger features a bold front fascia and a stylish and muscular profile that looks ready for action and sets it apart from other midsize trucks. You can choose from the extended SuperCab with a 6-foot box or the roomier SuperCrew cab with a 5-foot box, depending on your needs. The Ranger's high-strength steel frame and frame-mounted steel bumpers ensure it is tough enough for any job.

With the XL, you get remote keyless entry, black bumpers and fender moldings, a black mesh grille, automatic headlamps, daytime running lights, black door handles and mirrors,16-inch steel wheels, a cargo lamp, and a manual locking tailgate. Four cargo tie-down hooks help you secure your load.

Stepping up to the XLT trim gets you body-colored bumpers and fender moldings, a silver grille surround, fog lamps, power mirrors, 17-inch aluminum wheels, rear privacy glass, a power-locking tailgate, and LED taillights.

 The range-topping Lariat adds a chrome-trimmed grille, LED headlamps, and fog lamps, LED daytime running lights, 18-inch wheels, body-colored door handles, a sliding rear window, and an LED cargo lamp. You also get body-colored heated mirrors with integrated courtesy lamps and turn signals.

Smooth and Efficient Power

Powering the Ranger is an efficient and reliable twin-scroll turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost engine that offers 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. It's paired with a 10-speed SelectShift automatic transmission that optimizes gear changes to provide smooth, quick shifting. 

The Ranger comes standard with rear-wheel drive and offers four-wheel drive as an option. Rear-wheel-drive models will return up to 21 mpg in the city and 26 mpg for highway driving. With four-wheel drive, you'll get up to 20 and 24 mpg.

Depending on your Ranger's configuration, and when equipped with the available Trailer Tow package, you get a payload of up to 1,860 pounds and an impressive 7,500 pounds maximum towing capacity. So, you don't have to leave anything or anybody behind.

Off-Road Packages

When your adventures take you off the beaten path, you can equip your Ranger with the features to handle any terrain. Available since 2019, the FX4 Off-Road package can be added to all four-wheel-drive models. It includes a front bash plate, three underbody skid plates, off-road tires, specially tuned shocks and suspension, an electronic-locking rear differential, front tow hooks, a terrain management system, a low-speed crawl control system, and an off-road instrument display.

For the 2020 model year, Ford introduced the FX2 Off-Road package to give rear-wheel-drive Rangers additional off-road capability. The package features FX2 bodyside decals, OWL off-road tires, an electronic-locking rear differential, off-road suspension tuning, and a prominent steel bash plate.

Newly available for 2021, the Tremor Off-Road package takes the Ranger's off-road capability to another level. The Tremor package gives you 9.7-inches of ground clearance, upgraded suspension, FOX shocks, aggressive 32-inch all-terrain tires on 17-inch rims, hoop-style side steps, additional underbody protection, front and rear tow hooks, and six upfitter switches. You also get unique styling details inside and out.

Modern and Roomy Interior

Inside, the Ranger features a comfortable, well-appointed cabin with intuitive controls and instrumentation. The SuperCab offers seating for four, along with rear under-seat storage. With the bigger SuperCrew cab, you get four full-size doors and seating for five people.

In the XL, you'll find cloth seats, or you can opt for hard-wearing vinyl. Interior features include a 2.3-inch vehicle information display, air conditioning, a tilt-and-telescoping steering column, and three 12-volt power outlets. With the XLT, you get premium fabric upholstery, a 4.2-inch vehicle information display, cruise control, steering wheel-mounted audio and cruise controls, and dual-zone automatic climate control.

The top-of-the-range Lariat trim features intelligent access with push-button start, leather upholstery, heated power-adjustable front seats, dual 4.2-inch driver information displays, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and ambient lighting with a choice of colors. You also get a 110-volt power outlet for powering up your electrical gear.  

Connectivity and Entertainment 

To keep you connected on the road, the Ranger comes standard with FordPass Connect and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. You and your passengers can connect up to 10 devices, and you can access the hot spot from up to 50 feet away. Also standard are 911 Assist and Applink. The XL offers a smart-charging USB port and a four-speaker sound system with AM/FM radio and Bluetooth pass-thru.

Step up to the XLT for the Sync 3 infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration, two USB ports, and six-speaker audio with satellite radio. The  8-inch center stack touchscreen features pinch-to-zoom capability. The Lariat offers the option of a premium Bang & Olufsen audio system with HD radio and six speakers in the SuperCab or 10 speakers in the SuperCrew.

Driver Assistance Technology

Every Ranger features Ford CoPilot360 technology, which includes AdvanceTrac with roll stability control, curve control, trailer sway control, pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking, a rearview camera, and an SOS post-crash alert system. XLT models add a lane-keeping system, blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert and trailer coverage, and automatic high beams. The Lariat trim offers reverse sensing assist. Additional available features include adaptive cruise control, forward-sensing assist, and rain-sensing wipers.
