Explore the Meadows Museum

You may know that Highland Park is located right next to Southern Methodist University (SMU), but you might not realize that the university has an exceptional art museum with a large collection that draws you back again and again. The Meadows Museum was founded by Algur H. Meadows, who was an avid collector of Spanish art, his true passion. He started his collection in 1962 and formed the Meadows Museum at SMU to house his beloved works after his wife passed away. Currently, the museum has one of the finest Spanish art collections outside of Spain.

In addition to its collection of Spanish art, the Meadows Museum has an excellent permanent art exhibit that displays artwork from artists such as Juan Carreño de Miranda, Vicente López, Sorolla, Zuloaga, Francisco Bayeu, Raimundo de Madrazo, and Goya. Rotating exhibits always offer something new and unique, and they provide you with a great excuse for returning to the museum repeatedly. Make sure to walk around outside in the plaza to view beautiful sculptures by renowned 20th-century artists, including Jacques Lipchitz, Henry Moore, and Claes Oldenburg.

The museum constantly expands its collection, so you never know what you might see. It's open every day except Monday. On Thursdays after 5 p.m., admission is free for everyone, and for children under 18, admission is free every day. The museum is part of the Blue Star Museums program, which allows those in the military and their families to enter at no cost.

Relax or Stroll in Lakeside Park

It features over 14 acres of meticulously landscaped terrain with walking paths that take you through beds of fragrant flowers, under shady trees, and across a bridge that spans Turtle Creek.

Don't forget to bring your camera so you can get some photos of the cute and whimsical granite bear statues situated throughout the park. Benches are also located conveniently along the paths, so you can sit by the creek and watch the birds or bring a snack to enjoy under the shade of a large tree.
