Which 2021 Ford SUV is Right for You?

Posted at Wed, Sep 1, 2021 10:00 AM

One of the most important attributes of any vehicle is its reliability. A vehicle with a high predicted reliability rating is less likely to experience mechanical problems and require costly repairs. Additionally, it has a longer service life and higher resale value. Ford is one of the automakers that are known to produce exceptionally dependable vehicles that provide great value for money. If you're shopping for a Ford SUV in the Dallas area, check out this helpful guide to find out which model is the most reliable.

If you live in a city and have an active lifestyle, the 2021 Ford Escape is the ideal SUV for you. Due to its relatively small size, this compact crossover is easy to drive in congested traffic and parking lots, making it an excellent urban commuter. Nonetheless, it can also be a great road-trip vehicle, thanks to its energetic engines, agile handling, and generous cargo space. Overall, the Escape is a versatile SUV that can meet almost every driver's needs.

The Ford Escape offers a choice of two engines: a 181-horsepower 1.5-liter turbo-three and a 250-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo-four. With a tow rating of 3,500 pounds, this SUV is capable of handling smaller weekend toys such as dirt bikes, ATVs, and jet skis. Despite its potent engines, the Escape is one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles in its class, returning 28/34 mpg (city/highway) with the base engine and 23/31 mpg with the turbo-four.

Inside, the Ford Escape provides a generous amount of legroom and headroom in both rows of seats. It also has up to 65.4 cubic feet of cargo space, which is enough for storing several large suitcases or more than a dozen carry-on bags. Additionally, the crossover comes with many standard active safety features to help you stay safe on the road, including forward-collision alert, automatic high-beam headlights, blind-spot detection, lane-keeping assistance, and rear cross-traffic warning.

In a J.D. Power study, the 2021 Ford Escape received a predicted reliability rating of 72 out of 100, which is about average. Ford backs this SUV model with a three-year or 36,000-mile limited warranty and a five-year or 60,000-mile powertrain warranty.

2021 Ford Edge

If you want a more exciting driving experience or frequently go on long trips, you may be better off choosing the 2021 Ford Edge. This compact SUV has a slightly longer body than the Ford Escape, which translates into a larger cargo area. With a maximum cargo capacity of 73.4 cubic feet, it allows you to store all kinds of sports gear and camping equipment. The seats in this crossover are also adult-friendly and comfortable.

In addition, the Ford Edge is significantly more powerful than the Ford Escape. It comes standard with a 2.0-liter turbo-four engine rated at 250 horsepower, but you can opt for the optional 335-horsepower twin-turbo V-6 that powers the performance-oriented ST trim. When fitted with the V-6 engine, the crossover can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in about six seconds. Similar to the Escape, the Edge can tow up to 3,500 pounds.

You'll also find plenty of standard features in the Ford Edge. This SUV features an excellent infotainment system that includes a 12-inch touch-screen display, four USB ports, a Wi-Fi hot spot, Bluetooth, satellite radio, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, and a six-speaker sound system. It's also fitted with a generous list of driver-assistance technologies to reduce your risk of getting into an accident.

The 2021 Ford Edge has a higher predicted reliability rating than any other Ford SUV. J.D. Power gave it a score of 82, making it one of the most dependable vehicles in its class. The Edge offers the same warranty coverage as the Escape.

2021 Ford Explorer

The 2021 Ford Explorer is a popular option among drivers who have large families. This three-row midsize SUV has a roomy cabin that provides good outward visibility and a large cargo area that offers up to 87.8 cubic feet of storage space. Also, the Explorer is fitted with many standard infotainment features to provide an enjoyable in-vehicle experience, including an 8-inch touch-screen display, a Wi-Fi hot spot, four USB ports, satellite radio, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

One of the highlights of the Ford Explorer is its potent engine lineup. It can be equipped with the base 2.3-liter turbo-four with 300 horsepower, a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 with 365 horsepower, or a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 with 400 horsepower. This SUV has a maximum towing capacity of 5,600 pounds, which enables it to pull a small boat or a medium-sized camper with no issue.

The Ford Explorer has a solid predicted reliability rating of 74. As such, it's the second most reliable model in the Ford SUV lineup.

2021 Ford Expedition

If you routinely need to transport a large number of people or plenty of cargo, you may want to consider getting the full-size Ford Expedition. The base model of this SUV can seat up to five people in two rows, while the other trims have three rows and a seating capacity of eight. Regardless of which model you choose, every row provides adequate legroom for occupants of all sizes. The cargo area of the Expedition can be expanded to 104.6 cubic feet, which is big enough for even a stack of plywood sheets.

Unlike the other Ford SUVs, the Ford Expedition comes with only one engine option, which is a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 that generates 375 horsepower. However, if you choose the Platinum trim, power output is increased to 400 horsepower. With proper equipment, the SUV has an incredible tow rating of 9,300 pounds. Nevertheless, it still manages to deliver a fuel-efficiency rating of 17/23 mpg, which is great for its class. Consumer Reports awarded the 2021 Ford Expedition a predicted reliability score of three out of five, which puts it in the middle of the pack.
